Frequently Asked Questions

What is LSFA?

LSFA is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit organization formed to offer recreational flag and tackle football. Our focus is on athletes K-7th grade learning the game of football and feeding our middle school high schools game ready athletes.  We are a staff of dedicated parents, volunteer coaches, and an administrative board.

What programs are offered?

LSFA offers NFL flag in the Spring season and NFL Flag and Tackle in the Fall season.

Is the league co-ed?

Yes

What are the age requirements?

The player must be 5 years old at the time of first practice for a respective season. Players can play up ONE division upon parent's approval depending on team formation numbers.

Can players from outside Lee's Summit play in LSFA leagues?

For Flag: Yes, with possible restrictions. LSFA prioritizes Lee's Summit residents since we have standing agreements with the Lee's Summit Parks Department. We roster kids based off of LS resident status (1), kids attending LSR7 schools who have an address outside of Lee's Summit (2), and then kids who do not live in Lee's Summit or attend LSR7 schools (3).

Tackle football eligibility requires an athlete to be a Lee’s Summit resident that attends LSR7 or private schools in the surrounding areas. We verify birth certificates to prove age and require a school enrollment that matches the registered address. Those that do not and wish to play in LSFA must be released by their home KCYFL partner league. For more information please email tackle@lsfootball.org

What football rules are followed by the league?

Tackle follows the Kansas City Youth Football League (KCYFL) rule book. Link to Rules.

Flag follows a modified NFL Flag Rule book.  Link to Rules.

Can I pick my coach?

No, teams are built according to our published formation rules. These are ratified every season. The board reserves the right to make roster changes as needed to better serve the LSFA community.  Team Formation Process

Can I coach with my (soccer, baseball, basketball) coaching staff in LSFA?

Can I bring my (soccer, baseball, basketball) team as a whole to play in LSFA leagues?

No. We strictly follow our formation rules. Please refer to the roster exemption section of our formation rules for details on exemption.

Do you have a buddy system?

No. In some circumstances, a coach may be able to use a volunteer labor exemption. Please see our roster exemption section of our formation rules.

How can I become a coach?

Coaches must register with LSFA (check the "For Coaches" page), complete a USA football certification, and background check annually.

Background checks will be completed upon coach registration.

Coach registration opens when player registration opens.

When are the registration periods?

Spring Registration typically runs from January to March each year.

Fall registration begins in May and typically runs through June.

What does my registration fee cover?

Fall Tackle: includes equipment and jersey rental fees, field operations, officiating, and insurance.

Spring/Fall Flag: includes a game-breaker soft shelled helmet rental, field operations, officiating, and insurance.  Flags and jerseys are also included, which players can keep at the end of the season.

What is the difference between Spring and Fall Flag team formations & coaches? Why does my player sometimes have a different coach in the Fall & Spring?

Players rostered on a Fall Flag football team will remain with that team for each subsequent Fall season, as long as the head coach or assistant coach remains.  The league uses this approach in the spirit of building on team playbooks, philosophies & comradery between players & coaches.

Spring Flag teams may have some of the same players as the Fall leagues,  but due to a smaller number of players and coaches that register in the Spring, teams likely will not be exactly the same.  Thus your player may be with a different team/coach in the Spring, but will return to the team they participated with the previous Fall, if the Head Coach returns or an Assistant Coach opts to assume the team if the Head Coach does not return.

Fall team formation holds precedent over Spring teams.

More detail can be found on team formation here.

What is the league's refund policy?

See our refund policy here: Link to polic

Why do I need to provide my child’s grade card and birth certificate?

Birth Certificates are needed to validate the players age to ensure players are playing against the same age level, and that they meet the minimum age requirement.

Grade cards are used to validate the school where the player is enrolled, which is used to help with team formations.

Where are the games played?

All flag games are played at the Legacy Park football fields.

Tackle games are played at the local middle schools and high schools for home games, and several KCYFL locations for road games. These may include Grain Valley, Fort Osage, Kearny, Independence, Raymore, Belton, and more.

When are games played?

For Fall Season, games typically begin the weekend before Labor Day, with Labor Day weekend taken off, and then games resume and run through the end of October, with playoffs concluding the first weekend of November.

Spring season games typically begin the first weekend in April and run through mid-May.

Where and when are practices?

Practices are typically at local Lee's Summit Parks and Rec parks, or at local school facilities. Coaches will determine the location, date and time of the practices.

Spring season begins practices in March and plays games in April and early May.

Fall season NFL Flag practices typically begin 8/1.

Tackle practices can begin in mid Early/Mid July.

Most flag teams practice 1-2 times per week at local parks, while most tackle teams typically practice 3-4 times per week and practice at local schools.

What equipment will my child need?

All parents must furnish shoes/cleats and a mouthpiece.  LSFA will provide jerseys, flags, helmets and tackle pads.  See more details above on what your registration covers.

What size footballs are used?

K - 1st grade use mini sized footballs

3rd - 4th grade use Pee Wee sized balls.
